Breast Reduction Procedures
There are many methods and techniques used in breast reduction surgery. How do you determine which method is best suited to you?
Which Breast Reduction Surgery Method is Right For You?
There are several different methods of breast reduction surgery commonly in use today. Each of these methods is suited to different types of patients and to different desired results.
During your initial consultation, one of our Breast Reduction Specialists will walk you through your all your options and give you professional recommendations for treatment.
The current size of your breasts and the desired amount of reduction are the primary factors that your surgeon will look at in determining which method of breast reduction is best suited to you. You surgeon will also discuss your specific wishes and desires to ensure that the method chosen best suites your personal needs.
When we perform a breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty, we always perform it with a breast lift. This is also referred to as a breast reduction and lift. The lift repositions the breast so that it’s higher and more appropriate for its new smaller size. After the excess tissue is removed, we then remove the extra skin along the border of the breast and under the nipple to put the nipple into a higher position and to take up the extra fabric that’s now draped over the breast; this creates a pretty, high, perky breast.
Common breast reduction surgery methods
With breast reduction surgeries the aspects that vary most from method to method are the design of the incision, the area from which tissue is removed and the technique by which the nipple is repositioned.
"Dr. Killeen went over all the procedures that were an option for my breast reduction surgery and help me choose the best procedure. She didn't just tell me what she was going to do, she included me in the decision making which I appreciated so much. If your looking for the best breast reduction surgery in Los Angeles, the Breast Reduction Center is the place to go." - C. S.
The Wise Pattern Breast Reduction method is the oldest and most common technique in use. In this method an incision is made around the perimeter of the areola, vertically down the center of the breast and then horizontally along bottom seam of the breast where it meets the abdomen.
A breast reduction, will actually by nature lift your breasts so that the sit higher up on your chest with the nipples positioned as they should be. Using advanced techniques our surgeons carefully rebuild your tissue to create internal support or an "internal bra". This prevents the eventual sagging that occurs when breasts are supported only by their own skin and ensures that your results will last.
The Vertical Incision method is a newer technique in breast reduction surgeries. In this method an incision is made around the border of the areola and then vertically down from the areola to the breast crease. The vertical incision method is also commonly used as a breast lift procedure, for women are seeking improved cosmetic appearance without a breast reduction.
Breast reduction surgeries almost always involve moving the nipple and areola (referred to as the Nipple/Areola Complex or NAC). There are several methods that can be used to safely relocate the nipple areola complex without ever cutting off blood flow, disconnecting milk ducts or losing nerve connection. These are referred to as the pedicle methods of breast reduction.
You may have heard of plastic surgeons advertising liposuction alone as a method of breast reduction. While it is true that liposuction can be used for breast reduction, the fact is that very few women meet the criteria necessary to achieve optimal results from this method.
Today there are newer methods in the field of breast lift and breast reduction which are advertised or hyped "scarless." While such a procedure would be wonderful it is unfortunately just not possible. The fact is that all breast reduction methods require incision of the best and incisions result in scars. There are, however, techniques that can be used to keep scarring to a minimum or ensure that scars are located where they are less likely to be seen.
The peri-areolar method requires the just one incision in each breast. Just as the name implies, this incision goes around the perimeter of the areola. Like the vertical incision method, this method is also used by itself as a method of breast lift surgery.
